Akagera is Rwanda’s only savannah park and home to the “Big Five” – lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes – along with an impressive variety of other wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, hippos, and antelopes. The park’s diverse ecosystems include open plains, woodlands, wetlands, and lakes, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.
Upon arrival at your lodge, you’ll have time to relax and soak in the tranquil surroundings. As the sun sets over the park’s rolling hills and shimmering lakes, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and prepare for the exciting day ahead.
Day 2Full Game Drive in Akagera National Park
Today wake up early for a full day of exploration in Akagera National Park. The day begins with a morning game drive, where you’ll traverse the park’s vast landscapes in search of its iconic wildlife. With your experienced guide leading the way, you’ll have opportunities to spot lions lounging in the grasslands, elephants roaming through the woodlands, and herds of buffalo grazing near waterholes.
The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 500 bird species recorded here. Keep an eye out for majestic fish eagles, colorful kingfishers, and rare shoebills as you navigate through Akagera’s wetlands.
After a picnic lunch in the heart of the park, continue your exploration with an afternoon game drive. This is an excellent time to spot hippos and crocodiles basking along the shores of Lake Ihema or catch sight of elusive leopards as they prepare for their evening hunt. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and relaxation.
Day 3Transfer to Nyungwe National Park with Canopy Walk
Today you’ll leave Akagera behind and embark on a scenic drive to Nyungwe National Park, located in southwestern Rwanda. Along the way, marvel at Rwanda’s picturesque countryside as you pass through terraced hillsides, tea plantations, and charming villages.
Nyungwe National Park is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and a biodiversity hotspot renowned for its primates and bird species. Upon arrival at the park, you’ll have the opportunity to experience its famous Canopy Walk, a thrilling adventure that takes you 60 meters above the forest floor on a suspended walkway.
As you traverse the canopy walk, enjoy panoramic views of the forest and look out for wildlife such as monkeys swinging through the trees or birds soaring above. This unique perspective offers a deeper appreciation for Nyungwe’s ecological significance and stunning beauty. After return to lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe National Park
Today wake early for one of the highlights of your safari: chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park. After a briefing from park rangers about trekking protocols and chimpanzee behavior, you’ll set off into the dense rainforest accompanied by experienced guides.
Nyungwe is home to one of East Africa’s largest populations of chimpanzees, along with other primates such as colobus monkeys and golden monkeys. Trekking through this ancient forest is an adventure in itself as you navigate through thick vegetation and listen for the calls of chimpanzees echoing through the trees.
Once you locate a troop of chimpanzees, you’ll have an hour to observe them in their natural habitat. Watch as they swing from branches, groom each other, and display fascinating social behaviors that mirror human interactions. This intimate encounter with our closest relatives is both thrilling and humbling.
Day 5Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Today you’ll leave Nyungwe behind and journey north to Volcanoes National Park, located in Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains near the border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This iconic park is famous for its population of endangered mountain gorillas and serves as a key destination for Rwanda gorilla safaris.
The drive offers stunning views of Rwanda’s mountainous terrain and vibrant communities along the way. Upon arrival at Volcanoes National Park, check into your lodge surrounded by lush greenery and prepare for tomorrow’s gorilla trekking adventure. In the evening, enjoy a cultural experience with local communities who live near the park.
Day 6Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park & Transfer Back to Kigali
The final day of your safari is reserved for an unforgettable experience: gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. After an early morning briefing at the park headquarters, you’ll be assigned a trekking group based on your fitness level before setting off into the misty mountains with expert guides and trackers.
Mountain gorillas are among the most endangered primates on Earth, with only about 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild. Trekking through dense vegetation and steep terrain to find these gentle giants requires effort but is immensely rewarding.
Once you locate a gorilla family, spend an hour observing them from close quarters as they interact with each other under towering bamboo trees. Witnessing their expressive faces and peaceful demeanor is a life-changing experience that leaves visitors deeply moved. After your trek, return to your lodge for lunch before heading back to Kigali.
